• Follow any additional dietary restrictions provided by your surgeon or anesthesiologist.

Hygiene
• Shower and wash the anal area thoroughly on the morning of the surgery.
• Avoid applying lotions, creams, or powders to the anal area.

• Your surgeon may recommend a bowel prep, such as a laxative or enema, to clear the bowels before surgery.
• Follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare team.

• Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours before the surgery, as these can interfere with anesthesia and healing.

Bowel Prep & Clear Liquid Diet Instructions

Before the Surgery
Bowel Preparation
• Follow a clear liquid diet for the entire day before. Approved liquids include water, clear broth or bouillon, black coffee, tea (without milk or cream), clear fruit  juices without pulp (apple, white grape), and gelatin (without added fruit or toppings), coffee or tea without creamer or milk. Avoid red, blue, or purple liquids, as they can discolor the colon and interfere with the procedure.
• Drink one 10 oz. bottle of Magnesium Citrate at 6:00 PM. You can buy this product over the counter at any drugstore. Individual response to laxatives varies. It often works within 30 minutes, but may take up to three hours. It is advised that you allow yourself plenty of time to complete this preparation.
Day of Surgery
Preparation
You will need to do 2 Fleet enemas. You can do these in a knee-chest position or sitting on the toilet, whichever is most comfortable and convenient for you. Begin the first enema approximately two hours prior to your arrival time. Retain each enema for as long as possible before proceeding with the next one.
